MOYER DESIGN AND SILK PAINTING
SILK HORIZONS 2008

A Silk Painting Retreat
In Lake Tahoe at Granlibakken Lodge
October 10-15 2008
1 800-790-6377

“At last the lake burst upon us--a noble sheet of blue water lifted six thousand three hundred feet above the level of the sea, and walled in by a rim of snow-clad mountain peaks that towered aloft three thousand feet higher still! As it lay there with the shadows of the mountains brilliantly photographed upon its still surface, I thought it must surely be the fairest picture the whole world affords.”
Mark Twain

Autumn is a stunning time of year for a Silk Painting Retreat in Lake Tahoe. While you are painting, exchanging ideas and expanding your silk horizons, you will enjoy and be inspired by the majestic beauty of the mountains the peaceful crisp days, the beautiful contrast of golden aspens against the blue skies and the rich jewel-like color of the alpine lake.

The Granlibakken Lodge is on the northwest side of the lake where the friendly year-round communities still have an authentic High Sierra character. While staying at Granlibakken you will enjoy comfortable lodging with three full gourmet meals a day. You will have access to forest trails, tennis, an on site pool and a hot tub. Nearby you will find opportunities for more hiking, bicycling, fishing, golf and boating as well as exploring the little town of Tahoe City with its quaint shops and excellent restaurants.

DYECOLOR™ PAINTING ON SILK

October 10-15, 2008
All Levels
Instructor: Susan Louise Moyer
We will prepare the surface of the silk so that liquid dye can be applied to the silk without the use of a linear resist. DyeColor™ painting techniques are similar to the way watercolor is painted on paper. Silk, as a surface to work on, has its own qualities and enables the artist to achieve luminous color and new creative options. For example, gutta and wax resist techniques, flowing dye, and the alcohol discharge technique can be combined with DyeColor™ painting on the same work of art. Various painting techniques related to DyeColor™ painting will be taught including: washes, shading, blending and masking. Airbrush and unique stenciling techniques will also be introduced. Watercolor enthusiasts as well as silk painters will find this workshop to be a departure from tradition and an inspiration for new directions.

Susan is the author of Silk Painting the Artist’s Guide to Gutta and Wax Resist Techniques and Silk Painting for Fashion & Fine Art. She has been teaching nationally and internationally since 1991.

SILK PAINTING: ACHIEVING YOUR VISION

October 10-15, 2008
Intermediate/Advanced
Instructor: Merridee Joan Smith
Come with a vision of the artist you are and the artwork you wish to create. The techniques demonstrated will go beyond the basics and are designed to encourage development of space and the integration of forms in your work. They will constitute a silk painter’s “toolbox” to help you reach your artistic vision. Techniques include linear under-painting to create an integrated resist line; layering colors and images; ombre grounds; line building; developing form and texture using alcohol, diluent and hair dryer; and a wax/alcohol discharge technique.

Merridee’s artwork is featured in Susan’s revised edition of Silk Painting for Fashion and Fine Art. Merridee, who loves painting flora and fauna, is proficient in linear under-painting and has assisted Susan with her workshops for many years. She shows at the Briggs and Company Gallery in Winters, CA and has participated in gallery shows throughout the Sacramento area as well as the Orchid and Bromeliad Society shows which are held across the country. Her work was featured in Silk Symphony in the Gallery at the Mendocino Art Center in 2004. In 2004 she was also chosen to display a 9’x 3’ silk banner in the United States Botanical Garden Conservatory for a show co-sponsored by the USBG and the Smithsonian Institution. In 2005, one of her silk paintings was chosen for display at the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian.

EVENING DEMONSTARTIONS & SLIDE PRESENTATION

Presenter: Jeanette Shires A New Look - Silk and Canvas
As an option for framing and displaying your paintings, Jeanette, will demonstrate a method of mounting your painted silk on stretched canvas. She will demonstrate mounting silk on white pre-stretched canvas as well as alternative methods where the canvas is first painted or airbrushed. Whether you are mounting a single painting or coordinating a grouping, you will be opening up new creative options and at the same time presenting your artwork in a professional way.
Jeanette’s artwork is featured in Susan’s revised edition of Silk Painting for Fashion and Fine Art. She designed and produced silk painted, quilted and stuffed tropical Fantasy Fish for Disney. Jeanette’s Fantasy Fish were featured in Silk Symphony in the Gallery at the Mendocino Art Center in 2004.

Presenter: Keith Smith: Using Traditional Techniques in New Ways.
Keith will demonstrate how he uses both antique and modern Indonesian tjaps (batik stamps) to create his contemporary works.
Keith became enthralled by Indonesian batik at the World Batik Conference held at the Boston College of Art in 2005. There he met Indonesian artists Agus Ismoyo and Nia Fliam with whom he has been in frequent communication since the conference. He sells his work through galleries in Auburn and Winters, California.
